Trump insulted Mexico far more crudely than Canada. Mexico negotiates on, 85 per cent of exports tariff-free. Canada gets a 50 per cent tariff on US$20 billion. One neighbour kept its head. Why?
"... Carney is a fitting heir to Justin Trudeau ..." A cutting and incredibly true comment, Sir.
I offer a further comment of my own: I believe that you have correctly captured the dynamic, that is, that Mexico knows who it is and what it needs and is bargaining accordingly whereas Canada is largely self-delusional about itself and is refusing to bargain unless and until it's arrogant pride is assuaged - which will not happen.
Yes. The sad part is that Laurentian Canadians do it while vigorously condemning Trump’s abundant arrogance. They may lack at least as much self-awareness as they claim he does.
Thank you for this clear analysis. Most helpful in trying to 'get a handle' on the difference between Canada and MX's negotiation strategies with the US.
Brutal cold hard facts cut through the petty thin skin and go to the heart of what is happening right in front of us in real time.
This is not the type of rhetoric that the anointed state broadcaster or an unserious country can tolerate from the great unwashed.
If this Carney score card belonged to a conservative government it would make Joan of Arc’s demise look like a walk in the park.
We are being sold a bill of goods by the replacement emperor and the recycled minions along with a handful of born again scoundrels.
Facing unpleasant realities and difficult truths in the face of adversity requires humility, pragmatism, and maturity.
High demand short supply.
What we get are half truths, anti American rhetoric and jabs about how wearing a cowboy hat can impair cognitive functioning followed by big belly laughs.
This result only strengthens the Trump administrations resolve and reinforces the old adage of Alberta as North Texas and the laurentian elite wonder why.
Alas the emperor who is all hat no cattle rues the day and the negotiations to much fan fare from the chattering class.
"The bigger difference remains self-knowledge. Mexico knows exactly what it is: a dependent exporter that cannot afford oversized pride at the border. It sends more than eighty per cent of its exports to one customer and negotiates accordingly, with a cool head and a long memory. Canada sends 71.7 per cent of its exports to the same customer while telling itself stories about being superior, a major trading nation. The stories no longer survive the arithmetic. Canada accounts for roughly 2.2 per cent of world merchandise exports and now ranks below Mexico. Yup, the gaslighting is coming from inside the house."
Marco, well done. Canada needs to awaken to a higher truth. Carney is not for Canada ! Ford and Eby are brain dead minions of Carney. Carney is a globalist ! Carney is the point man of the controlling system that is being dismantled by Trump. Carney thinks that he can outlive Trump politically. He postures and performs while trying to buy time until the Trump term is over. Time for Canadians to see the bigger picture !
Upper Canada was founded by refugees from the U.S. after the American Revolution. Canada is more similar, yet more at odds with the U.S. than Mexico. Canadians can, when they emigrate to the U.S., blend in seamlessly. Put simply, we are cousins separated by an old family quarrel. Canada will always take offense and act more emotionally when the U.S. treats it as just another foreign country.
Thank you, and thanks for sharing that. The psychology of this whole thing, which you develop very well, should be of great concern to sane Canadians. Tantrums are one thing, but the accompanying authoritarian desire to impose keeps growing. I'm grateful we live in a part of the country where there is less of it, but the infection of federal institutions will make sure the attitude thrives even more.
Lucky you, Marco, you must not be from Ontario. Indeed the authoritarian desire but also the implementation of it, may lie within the regulating institutions, to keep it growing. Very sad.

Thanks again Marco

So well stated and written.

Devastatingly incisive!

Exactly! Until we humble ourselves and honestly accept we need them far more than they need us we will continue to fail. Pride comes before a fall.
Carney, being 90% invested in the US plays us for the fools we are.

Agree, well argued. Here was my take from a different angle but a similar perspective: https://peaisgreen.substack.com/p/for-the-c2c-journal-beyond-the-tantrum
