Alberta’s trade woes stem from blockading provinces and Ottawa’s weakness, not geography. Independence could free Alberta to negotiate U.S. trade corridors, like Kazakhstan, which overcame hostile neighbours to secure multi-directional export access.
Switzerland and Austria aren’t petro-states. Getting free of left-wing net-zero Canada would certainly help, but the US whipsaws between hydrocarbon-friendly regimes like the current one, and the same net-zero cancel all the pipelines stuff we have in Canada. Building refineries in Alberta would probably be the best possible long-term plan.
Perhaps, but refining everything isn't an answer. By the same logic, we would have millions of barrels of refined fuel trapped in the province if we refined everything. Plus, fuels are even more volatile for transport than bitumen.
